Traveling with a pet on Singapore Airlines: Carriage rules and policy

Singapore Airlines announces that pets such as cats, dogs, birds, etc. are accepted on board its flights.

Is there a cost for transporting pets on board?

Regarding pet transport fees, pets are allowed free of charge on Singapore Airlines flights. However, the pet, including its cage, is considered excess baggage (not included in the baggage allowance allocated when booking). This may result in additional baggage charges if the total weight (pet + cage + baggage) exceeds the airline’s permitted limits.

The rule changes when you travel from the United States: Singapore Airlines uses the piece concept, so you must pay a fee for two additional pieces (pet + cage). The fees vary between USD 120 and USD 280 per piece.

Carrying your pet in the cabin?

Singapore Airlines has banned all emotional support animals from its aircraft cabins other than trained service dogs.

Your pet must travel in an approved cage

  • In the event of import or export of the animal

If you plan to transport your dog on a Singapore Airlines flight for business reasons (import/export), and you are departing from or to the United States, you must complete this form and present it to the check-in agent at the airport.

If you are importing or exporting your pet to or from:

– Singapore: Apply for the appropriate licenses from the Animal & Veterinary Service.

– India: Find out about the required certificates by opening this link.

Size and weight of the animal and the transport cage

According to current regulations and requirements for pet transportation, you may carry your pet in the hold, subject to the weight and size limits applied by Singapore Airlines.

– Weight limit (pet and container combined): 32 kg (or 23 kg in Economy class)

– Maximum height of the carrier: 70 cm on the A350, 60 cm on the A380, 101 cm on the A390, and 111 cm on the B787.

Regarding the carrier: The dog must not be able to stand without its ears touching the top of the carrier, nor must it be able to move around and lie down comfortably.

The carrier cannot accommodate more than one pet, except in the case of two pets (of the same category) aged between 3 and 6 months and weighing less than 14 kg each.

Check that the closure is secure

The carrier must be equipped with a metal door and a suitable lock to ensure its integrity during the flight. Failure of the lock could cause the door to open and your pet to escape. You definitely don’t want your pet to get lost or harm someone.

Check the carrier’s absorbency and ventilation

Keep in mind that it’s entirely possible that your dog will need to relieve itself during the flight. On short haul flights, if all goes well, you can avoid this problem and your dog will arrive at its destination. However, it’s best to purchase a carrier with a waterproof surface and ensure that the cabin is well ventilated.

Label the animal container

Remember to affix the required identification tags before handing it in at check-in. This will prevent it from being lost. It generally requires two labels: one for “Live Animals” with the arrows pointing upwards and the other with the owner’s information.

Booking procedure

Before taking your Singapore Airlines flight with a dog or other pet, you must inform the airline when booking your ticket or a few days before your flight. (at least 48 hours in advance) as the number of available seats is limited. Furthermore, even if your pet is small and can travel in the cabin, it must always be inside the carrier and under the seat.

Airport procedures

On the day of your flight, try to arrive at the airport early to give yourself enough time to check in comfortably.

Check in and check your pet in for the flight

Try to arrive at the Singapore Airlines check-in counter at least 2 hours before departure (and 3 hours before the flight if you are departing from an airport in the United States) to give yourself and your four-legged friend ample time to complete your check-in.

The check-in agent will ask for the following documents: your flight ticket, boarding pass, and your pet’s vaccination record.

You must also provide the agent with this form, bearing your signature, releasing Singapore Airlines from any liability in the event of injury to your pet during the flight.

When the agent gives you your boarding pass, you can go to the boarding area. At this time, your pet will be placed in the baggage room while it waits to be transported and placed in the hold.
